In continuation with my romp down memory lane and all things Irishward, I am re-posting the original interview I did with TwoTwiMoms back in December 2011. I enjoyed digging this up and re-reading again. I'd like to also believe my interviewing skills have improved since then, but still had to smile as I re-read this.

When did you discover Twilight?
twimom817 - Twilight the movie had already came out and was now on DVD. I was walking through the book aisle and saw the books and decided I wanted to know what all the hype was about. I grabbed Twilight and read it in 2 days and was instantly hooked.
kare831 - My "kids" introduced me to Twilight. They begged and begged for me to read the books so in 2009 when I visited CA from VA, I bought Twilight to read. I started it, and it was so hard for me to get into. Then we watched the movie and I thought OMG the book has to be better than the movie. So I finished the book and was hooked! I finished all the books within 2 days.
How did you find the fandom?
twimom817 - After reading the books I needed to find anything to keep the Twilight magic alive. I searched the internet and found a Twilight oriented website. From there I met some people who introduced me to fan fiction which in turn I met lots of other people, joined Twitter and the rest is history.
kare831 - I actually started blogging on Eclipsemovie.org and did the Eclipse re-read and in the threads people kept talking about "sparkly white unicorns" and I thought wtf are they talking about. Someone told me I needed to read WA. Well, I had NO idea what the hell WA was so I googled it. I found it in pdf format and downloaded it and read it. Then a friend of mine mentioned that she borrowed her avi from drotuno and she linked me to her profile. I read the Angel Series and the rest is history!
Are you in the Twicloset?
twimom817 - Partially yes. My family know I am a Twilight fan but no one in my family besides my husband knows I write fan fiction. And only one of my friends knows.
kare831 - I'm like Jill - yes and no. My family knows that I love Twilight, but not all of them know I write fan fiction. My parents know that I write FF, but don't know about the smut factor, lol.
Do your significant others support your fandom life?
twimom817 - My husband hasn't read anything I've written because he can't stand Twilight but he supports me. He says if that's what I want to do in my spare time then so be it. As long as family comes first, which it always does.
kare831 - I'm separated now, but when my husband was around he hated the fact that I wrote fan fiction. He didn't so much mind the writing as he minded who it was about. He'd read Twilight and seen the movies and didn't mind that, but he thought I was bigger than using someone else's characters. (He's crazy because Edward and Emmett are SO much fun to play with!)
Have you met fandom people in real life?
twimom817 - Yes. I've met my co-writer Kare831 once. I'm hoping I can still go to the TwiFic Meetup because there are so many people I want to meet, including my roommate and host of this interview. LOL kare831 - Yes. I met my co-writer twimom817 just before I moved back to CA from VA and then I met a whole mess of people at a little gathering after ComicCon 2011. Also, several of the mom's who I met at the BD premiere read/write fanfiction.
Why or how did you start writing fanfiction?
twimom817 - I was sitting on my couch one day and thought about my life and my son who has autism. I thought 'I could write a story about that'. I sat down and started writing. The chapters were short and needed work but I had the legit of it. Then someone told me about the FGB Autism compilation and I knew I wanted to do that. I tweeted looking for a beta to do that piece and found Kare831. I asked her if she wanted to co-write for the Autism piece and that's really when I started writing more often.
kare831 - I never thought I'd ever write fan fic. I used to write in college but hadn't written since. I woke up one morning with a plot bunny in my head and I sat down and outlined what later became Perfect Game. I had the first ten chapters written before I ever started posting.
How do you come up with your story lines?
twimom817 - I hate to say this but I really suck at story lines. Besides ASL which was based on my son's life most of the story lines I've write have come from Kare831. Except for the initial o/s storyline for Irishward. I had bounced that off my beta at the time and came up with that idea. Hey and look at that story now.
kare831 - Jill really does hate story lines, but a lot of the one shots that we have written were ideas that she came up with and I just went running with it. Irishward wasn't Irish originally. I said Jill - he'd be really hot if he was Irish so let's make him Irish. The bar that Bella met him in became a Pub. We make a great team that way - she has the concept and I give it depth.
Favorite fics - Completed and WIP's?
twimom817 - Oh God, do I have to? I have so many. The Breakers, The Gravity Series, An Angry Man, Boycotts and Barflies, A Father's Hope, The Submissive, The Naked Guy Upstairs, Late Night Encounters, & too many more to list.
kare831 - I hate this question because you always feel bad if you forget something! My ALL time favorite is University of Edward Masen but I love anything by drotuno and les16. I am HOOKED on How to Paint a House, Seeing Bella, Music of the Heart, This Heart Renewed and last but certainly not least ... Firefly in Summer.
What kind of environment do you like to write in?
twimom817 - I like it quiet so I can hear myself think.
kare831 - Usually quiet but that doesn't always happen. It depends on what I'm writing, but sometimes I like to listen to music.
Where and when do you write?
twimom817 - I write a lot at night when the kids are sleeping or at work (shhh don't tell anyone)
kare831 - Most of my writing is either done at work (weird I know because I'm a hair stylist LOL) or at night after my daughter goes to bed.
How do you find time to write?
twimom817 - When writing: outline or as it comes to you? I never used an outline before on my own stories it was just what came to mind. Although I always had an outcome of what I wanted the story to be. When I write with Karen she's usually the one to jot all our notes and keep track of timelines and ideas. She's more of an outline person even thought I should really start.
kare831 - I'm organized with my writing, so I write an outline. Everything else ... not so organized. =)
Who's POV do you like writing?
twimom817 - Edward's of course but it's sometimes depends on the story.
kare831 - I'm like Jill - I like writing Edward. But he's not necessarily my favorite character to write ... hehe.
How do you find inspiration when the ideas just won't flow?
twimom817 - I usually read to get the ideas coming. Whether it's fanfiction or a good romance book. I may even talk it through with other people. Sometimes it take a few days but eventually it comes.
kare831 - I usually turn to other fics. When I can't get past a certain scene, I'll try and find a fic with a similar situation to see how it was written and go from there. If I can't get ideas that way, I email Jill in a panic lol.
What advice would you give to anyone wanting to start writing?
twimom817 - If you really want to do it don't let anyone discourage you and just try. There is no harm in trying. And don't let bad reviews or comments get you down talk to other writers and get a better perspective. Also find a beta. Two sets eyes are better than one.
kare831 - I agree with Jill. Just try ... get on twitter - find someone to bounce ideas off of. I didn't have that until I found Jill and it was infinitely better than trying to do everything myself. Other writers will always be more understanding and supportive than someone who doesn't write because they've been there. Keep in mind that not EVERY writer will be that way though.
Do you write professionally? Do you aspire to?
twimom817 - This was always a hobby a way to express myself and nothing more.
kare831 - Writing has always been a hobby for me. I just can't imagine my writing ever being good enough to try and do anything more with it than post it for fun.
How do you handle negative reviews?
twimom817 - Most of the time I ignore them or talk it out with another writer and move on. Although I had one bad review when I was first writing ASL and it really pissed me off. I won't go into detail but it basically felt like they were putting down my son since the story was based on things he did and coped with dealing with Autism. I wrote a nasty response which in turn started a response war. Eventually I decided to not let it bother me and let it go although I will always remember it.
kare831 - ... that one's hard. I've had reviews where readers have said they'd flounce because they didn't want the story to go a certain way, that they didn't want the characters to go in a certain direction. I ended up with a story line that I wasn't crazy about, but it turned out okay.
If you could say one thing to your readers (fans) what would that be?
twimom817 - Thank you so much for taking the time to read my stories. You are what make us write those stories. You are all the best people in the world.
kare831 - Thanks for taking the time to read my stories. Your reviews and encouragement is what keeps me writing. I appreciate it more than I can ever express.
One thing you can't live without?
twimom817 - Hmm that's a tough one. I would have to say my cell phone. I'm a technology geek and always need to know what's going on.
kare831 - My cell phone definitely. I can check my email, tweet and read fanfic - what else do I need? LOL
You participate in a lot of fandom giveback causes, how many have you done and why so many?
twimom817 - I believe it's 4 I've done with Karen. I can't always make a difference in the world but if writing a story for a compilation is the one way I can help then I feel I'm doing my part. This fandom is made up of so many great people and I like helping out even it is just a little. Sometimes a little makes all the difference.
kare831 - I couldn't agree with Jill more. Each cause we choose to donate something for has meaning. We've done FGB Autism Spotlight, Tsunami Relief, and more recently Breaking Dawn for Alex's Lemonade Stand and Toys 4 Tots. All of them just GREAT causes that give to something bigger than we are. It's an honor to write for them and give something that can help out even if it's only a little bit. Sometimes a little can go a long way.
Running a blog is tremendous work and very time consuming, why did your start yours and how do you manage to keep up?
twimom817 - We started it to promote our stories and things going on in the fandom. It's really not that hard to keep it up since we don't really post as much as people think. Although I do most of the posting at night or when I have time during the day. I get feedback from Karen and we just go with it.
kare831 - I am the lazy one when it comes to the blog. I know absolutely nothing about blogging, so it's all left up to Jill. She comes to me wanting my opinion and that's all I really have to offer her but she does a phenomenal job with it.
And a nosy one - how did you come up with your pen name?
twimom817 - is just what I am plus my birth date. As for twotwimoms I'll let Karen tell since she came up with it.
kare831 - is just my nickname and my birthday - boring I know. Twotwimoms - well, we *are* two Twilight loving moms so it just fit! (I guess we could have used IrishwardOwnsUs but we really didn't expect that to happen - at all!)

Today is my day to showcase the To Serve Is Divine blog tour. I have been chomping at the bit while trying to contain my excitement because the lovely and brave R.E Hargrave agreed to do my typically nosy interview. But before we get to that, let's take a look at the synopsis of the story...

I'm an embarrassingly ridiculous fan of R.E Hargrave. My stalking antenna is on full alert for this author. And yes, she is also a fanfic writer, which is where I initially discovered her jaw dropping stories. And her loveliness, as I refer to her, still posts fanfic which I think is fantastic. R.E Hargrave is amazingly talented and her stories are highly addictive. I have been stalking following her forever and am so happy to be part of the tour. Now I know the story TSID very well and loved it when it originally posted. I even have the PDF which the author offered to everyone before she pulled the story. I also know reviewers who have read the ARC and loved it even knowing it was once a fanfic.
One review that really summed it all up was done by Italian Brat's Obsessions and it is well worth the time to check out, Jennifer had a lot of great things to say about the story.

Regardless of any preconceived notions of p2p, which the author addresses directly in the interview, R.E Hargrave is a talented story teller, extremely funny, down to earth, and is always nice to her fans.

So enough of my gushing and babbling, lets get up close and personal, with a bit of nosiness thrown in for fun with R.E Hargrave...
What kind of environment do you like to write in? Where and when do you write? How do you find time to write?
I'm going to bulk answer for these three questions! Preferably I like my environment quiet, though with three kids that's not always possible. The majority of my writing gets done during the day while they're off at school as I'm fortunate enough to be a stay-at-home mom. I am very fond of Enigma and that's what is typically playing as background when I get 'in the zone.' Currently my 'where' is the dining room table on my laptop. However, just because real life inevitably has to take the driver's seat doesn't mean that the thoughts and ideas stop for the day, so I'll find myself fleshing the stuff out in my head as I cook and run errands until I crawl into bed with my notebook and a pen. Yes – an old-fashioned paper and pen approach. At that point I'll just write what I can and when the structured sentences stop flowing, then I'll bullet point the rest of my ideas to be fleshed out the next time I get to the laptop.
When writing: outline or as it comes to you?
This is kind of a continuation of the previous question. No, I never formally outline. What I will do is get an idea, maybe envision a scene or two and then spend some time thinking about it. If it sticks with me, then I'll open a fresh document and jot down some notes before I turn to Google to find my “characters” – images that match the closest to what I'm envisioning and to those I'll add profile notes; things like physical descriptions or skills. Not only does that solidify the characters in my mind, it makes a great cheat sheet when you need to refer back at any point in the writing process. Also, I recently discovered Pinterest, and I have to admit it's a great tool for building storyboards for inspiration. Leading into your next question...
How do you find inspiration when the ideas just won't flow? How do you get over writer's block?
The next best way to get over writer's block? Write. Simple as. Suffice it to say, I have several projects started from when one set of characters wants to be stubborn. Consider it the author's version of “A watched pot never boils.” If the story doesn't want to cooperate, then fine, I assure you that you've got another tale inside you that is willing.
What advice would you give to anyone wanting to start writing?
Besides all the tips above? Humor aside, don't be afraid and don't doubt yourself. We all start somewhere and the best thing to do is to open that word doc or grab a notebook and just start getting your ideas down. That first draft won't be pretty. It'll be full of grammatical errors, your tenses will slip, your point-of-views will shift – you'll even have some sections that you read back later and go: “What the hell was I trying to say?” A good editing team will help you sort all of that out when the time comes. Now, that being said, you will have to address all of these to the best of your ability prior to submitting to a publishing house if you want them to take you seriously, but you should already be planning on going over your manuscript multiple times before you ever hit that step.
Know that if you are serious about writing, you will have to work. You will have to be open to criticism from your peers – and I highly suggest you enlist at least two people to pre-read – they'll spot things you've missed, and if they question something, then chances are general readers will too. Trust me, it's much easier to tweak and fix your plot line before it goes to print.
There will be hours upon hours spent from that first word being written until that golden moment arrives when you can say, “I'm published.” Rest assured that every tear, headache, and moment of “What am I doing?” will be worth it.
How do you handle negative reviews/blog postings?
*Knock on wood* I haven't had to deal with that yet, but I've got friends who have, and what I always tell them is they can't let one sour grape ruin the whole bunch. Pick it off, throw it away, and go on with your day.
If you could say one thing to your readers (fans) what would that be?
This all because of my readers. When I first started posting fanfic, I didn't tell a soul. I just put up the first chapter and then hid. Gradually readers found the story and reviews began trickling in, drawing me out of my corner. It was their insightful reviews and questions challenging my stories that pushed me to be more thorough in the telling of my tales, and honestly shaped me into the writer I am now. Am I perfect? Not by a long shot, but I'm definitely better, and it's down to the readers. Readers who have become friends on line. Readers who by their own admission have become my 'fans' though I'm really uncomfortable with that term. I'm just tickled that so many people have found enjoyment in my storytelling, and that makes it all worth it.
An obvious question, does sex sell?
Really? I'm going to plead the 5th on that one as The Divine Trilogy will be listed as erotica.
Some commentators have speculated that readers are free to read in public without the giveaway of a lurid cover, or that they will have less embarrassment taking the book to the cashier. Do you think there is anything in that?
Without a doubt, I do. It was this concept that was first and foremost in my mind when I started thinking about what I wanted my covers to look like. I wanted something elegant and tasteful that merely suggested there might be more to the book than the first impression, but that anyone sitting at their kid's social function, riding the bus, or even waiting at a doctor's office wouldn't feel ashamed or dirty to pull out and read. I think that was accomplished. All three covers have been designed to carry a theme and are symbolic of the plot line – but you'll have to read To Serve Is Divine to figure out the cover elements!
Who was your favorite character to write? Why?
Catherine – because she's independent and beautiful, but not self-absorbed. At no point does she think she's better than anyone else, nor does she ever blame her obstacles on anyone else. Watching her come into her own and find her inner strength through my chosen words has been amazing. *Wipes tear* I'm so proud of her.
Which do you think is more important in your book, plot or characterization? Can you have one without the other?
A good story is going to have a nice balance of both. You might have a fantastic story line but if you can't bring dimension and life to the characters who are “living” the story, how can a reader relate or get into it? Likewise, maybe you've created these amazing characters, fleshed them out down to the odd-shaped mole on their ass cheek, but all you've got for a story is a trip through the grocery store, and the big drama is whether to get the name brand or the store brand products. Who wants to read that?
What gave you the idea for The Divine Trilogy?
Some people know, and even more won't realize right away, that To Serve Is Divine was a Twilight fan fiction first. In fact, it was the first thing I ever wrote and shared in any public setting. In addition to the main story, I also wrote four outtakes at various times. The fan fiction began after my main characters, Catherine O'Chancey and Jayden Masterson, had already been together as Master and submissive for a year. When I put feelers out amongst some of my readers as to how they would feel about me pulling TSID for publishing, I was met with nothing but support and encouragement. Knowing that from the first outtake to the end of the epilogue actually covers about four years, and that there had always been interest in that missing first year, I made the decision that it would be best to break the overhaul up into three distinct stories. So, book 1 gets my original title and will cover that first year that everyone has always wondered about. Book 2, A Divine Life, will be familiar to those that read the fanfic, but leaps and bounds better as I've certainly grown as a writer in the two years I've spent writing fan fiction (I have over 30 stories under my belt now). Lastly, book 3, Surreal, will include a mix of new material and overhauled material as it will pick up pre-fanfic epilogue.
This is a good point to go ahead and move to your next question. . .
The dreaded P2P controversy, you know I have to ask, any thoughts why so many are vehemently opposed?
There are many theories, the one I hold to is that many people feel like the story was written with pre-existing characters, personalities, and setting therefore publishing a fanfic is like riding the coattails of someone else's hard work. Also, they feel that an author is being greedy to take away something that was available at no cost, and ask readers to now pay for it.
Being that the Divine Trilogy is a partial “pull to publish,” allow me to address both of these points. As indicated in my earlier answer about advice to new writers, preparing a book for publishing is a lot of work, or it should be. Pulling a fanfic and simply changing your character's names is NOT enough. If you're going to ask people to spend their hard-earned money on you, then you better damn well be willing to produce something worthy of their dollars.
In my case I have changed names, physical descriptions, character personalities location where the story takes place, and even went through the effort of changing it from first person to third person. But that's not all. By the time I have the entire trilogy written, I will have at least doubled, if not tripled, the original word count – meaning I have fully claimed the story as mine and developed it as such. Readers who know the original fanfic will recognize parts, but there will be plenty of new material to make them squirm. *Winks*
And for the love of whatever is holy to you, getting the material edited is crucial. Fanfic forums are a lot more forgiving to comma abuse, bad spelling, and pronoun confusion because they do realize that it is free entertainment, but if you want someone to buy your book, please make sure that it is a smooth, engaging read for them.
How long does it take you to come up with the ideas for a story?
I have to giggle at this question because most of us that write are familiar with the term “plot bunny.” These evil little things can come out of nowhere, usually when you don't want them to, and will nibble on your frontal lobe until you feed them.
One material thing you can't live without in your life?
That would have to be carbonated soda – when my tummy acts up, that's the only thing that works.
If stranded on a deserted island, what book boyfriend would you want with you?
Easy. Jamie Frasier from Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series. He's rugged, kind, and very useful in a tight situation. He'd also be quite easy on the eyes.

I love the fandom blogs and sites. The love and dedication the site owners have to make us all aware of the great stories, graphics, and happenings is exactly what makes this fandom go around. But I love even more when a site is dedicated to a specific love. The Majors Army is just one of those sites centering on the love of Jasper.
Recently some new life and love has been fanned in to the major with new admins, staff, and features for us all to enjoy. Whether you are a Jasper fan or not, you will still love what they ladies have done.
I recently spoke with the new owner, Frankielynn and co-admin, Emma lee Rose, both well known writers in the fandom to see how their love of Jasper led them to bringing the major back to us all...
Tell us about your site
We are a Jasper centric fanfiction rec site, also featuring Maria, Peter and Charlotte. As well as Banners, Fandom news and contests.
Why did you decide to take the site over?
Frankielynn: I hate to see good sites go. At the time I took it over the last post it had, had been over a year ago. I had done a review post for them in the past and knew who ran it. I sent her an email asking her if she would let me take it over. A few emails later and The Majors Army was mine.
What would you like your blog to accomplish?
Emma Lee Rose: We want to give people a place to go where they can get all the information. Where they can find recommendations to all the best stories, find the best banner makers, and learn what is happening throughout the fandom.
Frankielynn: Pretty much everything Em said. It's also fandom ran. We have forms on the blog for authors, readers, banner makers, other blog sites.
How do you decide which fics or authors to rec?
Frankielynn, EmmaLee Rose: We have a new suggestion form for authors and fans to send stories they want reviewed on the site our way, but since that is new, each individual segment writer picks the stories they will be recommending.
EmmaLee Rose: So far I have been choosing my favorite one-shots.
Do you have any plans for the future of your site that you would like to share?
Frankie, Em: We just want the site to make it past our one year mark. As one of the last Jasper rec sites around, it's getting harder to make it work, but we want to give it our best shot. That's really all you can ask for.
Favorite thing about the fandom?
Emma Lee Rose: My favorite thing about the fandom is the friendships that I have made.
Frankielynn: For me, it's not only the friendships I've made, but how we all can come together. The fandom causes that get started for things like Hurricane Sandy or a sick member in the fandom.
Worst thing about the fandom?
Frankie, Em: All the drama!
How did you find the fandom?
Emma Lee Rose: The first fic I ever found was Emancipation Proclamation, from there my obsession grew. I found my love of non-canon pairings and of course, Jasper. I didn't start writing until I was pregnant with my first daughter.
Frankielynn: I actually got turned on to Fanfiction and the fandom by a former co-worker of mine, shortly after that I wrote my first Fan Fic to pass the time being a stay at home mommy to my son. That was almost three or so years ago now. I've never looked back.
What do you think is the most important component to a rec site in the twific fandom?
Frankielynn: That the fandom works together. The Major's Army is in a bit of a rough patch, but if we all stick together, we can make it work. The Twi fandom, as well as any fandom needs it's members to make it work.
Who are you founding members and current staff?
Frankielynn: Besides the Major, I'm the new founder of the Majors Army as well as Emma Lee Rose and our newest member Charli Denae, who are both co-admins of the site with me. Em and Charli also have two post segments on the blog. Charli does our Canon Crew and Fandom Happenings, and Emma Lee is our One-Shot and Banner master. His somewhat womanizing ways, amazing singing and cooking skills, and his damn-sexy Irish accent make him unforgettable.

I recently spoke with the new owner, Frankielynn and co-admin, Emma lee Rose, both well known writers in the fandom to see how their love of Jasper led them to bringing the major back to us all...
Tell us about your site
We are a Jasper centric fanfiction rec site, also featuring Maria, Peter and Charlotte. As well as Banners, Fandom news and contests.
Why did you decide to take the site over?
Frankielynn: I hate to see good sites go. At the time I took it over the last post it had, had been over a year ago. I had done a review post for them in the past and knew who ran it. I sent her an email asking her if she would let me take it over. A few emails later and The Majors Army was mine.
What would you like your blog to accomplish?
Emma Lee Rose: We want to give people a place to go where they can get all the information. Where they can find recommendations to all the best stories, find the best banner makers, and learn what is happening throughout the fandom.
Frankielynn: Pretty much everything Em said. It's also fandom ran. We have forms on the blog for authors, readers, banner makers, other blog sites.
How do you decide which fics or authors to rec?
Frankielynn, EmmaLee Rose: We have a new suggestion form for authors and fans to send stories they want reviewed on the site our way, but since that is new, each individual segment writer picks the stories they will be recommending.
EmmaLee Rose: So far I have been choosing my favorite one-shots.
Do you have any plans for the future of your site that you would like to share?
Frankie, Em: We just want the site to make it past our one year mark. As one of the last Jasper rec sites around, it's getting harder to make it work, but we want to give it our best shot. That's really all you can ask for.
Favorite thing about the fandom?
Emma Lee Rose: My favorite thing about the fandom is the friendships that I have made.
Frankielynn: For me, it's not only the friendships I've made, but how we all can come together. The fandom causes that get started for things like Hurricane Sandy or a sick member in the fandom.
Worst thing about the fandom?
Frankie, Em: All the drama!
How did you find the fandom?
Emma Lee Rose: The first fic I ever found was Emancipation Proclamation, from there my obsession grew. I found my love of non-canon pairings and of course, Jasper. I didn't start writing until I was pregnant with my first daughter.
Frankielynn: I actually got turned on to Fanfiction and the fandom by a former co-worker of mine, shortly after that I wrote my first Fan Fic to pass the time being a stay at home mommy to my son. That was almost three or so years ago now. I've never looked back.
What do you think is the most important component to a rec site in the twific fandom?
Frankielynn: That the fandom works together. The Major's Army is in a bit of a rough patch, but if we all stick together, we can make it work. The Twi fandom, as well as any fandom needs it's members to make it work.
Who are you founding members and current staff?
Frankielynn: Besides the Major, I'm the new founder of the Majors Army as well as Emma Lee Rose and our newest member Charli Denae, who are both co-admins of the site with me. Em and Charli also have two post segments on the blog. Charli does our Canon Crew and Fandom Happenings, and Emma Lee is our One-Shot and Banner master. In The Spotlight with @Darcysmom
About a year ago, there was a day designated saluting the beta's. Personally, I thought it was a fantastic idea and one I hope continues. After all, the beta's are the unsung heroes behind many a fantastic story. But we don't really know them do we? Do you follow any beta's? Stalk them? I do!
It was my stalking tendencies that led me to Darcysmom. I don't even remember how we even started chatting, but I am glad we did.
Darcysmom is one of the nicest people I have met in Twitterdom. Always a nice word. Always willing to help. And is highly regarded by her peers. Personally, I have sent two new writers her way looking for help and every time Darcysmom was more than willing to help. And that's the thing. If someone asks me, do I know a beta? My answer is always...Darcysmom.
She also always makes me laugh with her tales of Odin and Abby, her precious Darcy, the hubs, and her day to day dealings with her students. And recently, her amazing recipes. You have to try her stuffed bacon wrapped chicken! She posts the step by step instructions with pictures on her twitter profile. She is fast becoming the twitter cookbook.
But who is Darcysmom? I know I wanted to know her better and what better way to find out then to lure her in with a profile? It was a genius idea and one I am thrilled worked!!
So let's get to know who Darcysmom is...
My first question, and I feel it is quite the priority on my nosy scale, are Odin and the cat related?? In my life I have never seen a dog and a cat with matching fur coloring! I love when you post their pictures together. Tell me a little about those two rascals.
It is just as amazing to us that Odin and Abby look so much alike. Odin is my sweet old man. He is a 14 year old mixed breed. He has been with us for about six years and is a total love. Abby is a shelter rescue we have owned for about 10 years. Abby has a pretty surly personality, about the only creature she is fond of is Odin. I think the only reason she likes him is that he looks so much like she does. You may have noticed that all the pictures I have posted of them together don't show Odin's face - he hates having his picture taken so I have to be really sneaky!
Darcy loves Odin. She often plays Scooby Doo with him. They will search the downstairs for clues and solve mysteries together.
From your pic posts, you obviously have a passion for cooking. I love your kitchen BTW! I have followed a few of your recipes and love that you post the pictures giving us all a visual. Many have also commented about loving your cooking lessons. What is it about cooking that you enjoy the most?
I am really excited that you tried a recipe! I do the cooking lessons because they are fun for me - you are the first person that has mentioned trying a recipe out. I have always loved cooking - I have early memories of my mom and granny letting me help with mixing and stirring. When I was eleven I was finally deemed old enough to cook one dinner a week, and I have been going strong ever since.
My granny definitely fueled my love for cooking. She was an amazing woman who raised seven kids on less than a shoestring budget. She blended the ideals of a modern woman with the values of a depression-era housewife. For example, she was adamant that I get as much formal education as possible because one of her greatest regrets was that her education only went to the eighth grade - her family couldn't afford to buy books for high school, so Granny went to work in a shoe factory instead. This zeal for education and the independence that comes with it was tempered by her absolute belief that I needed to be able to cook well so that I could get and keep a man.
So, she taught me the basics and gave me the confidence to feel like I could follow any recipe that struck my fancy. From the very beginning, I have cooked as an outlet for my creativity and as a way to show my friends and family that I love them.
I derive real pleasure from taking basic ingredients and creating a satisfying and delicious meal. I love being a competent home cook - I would never want to leap into cooking professionally; I am afraid that my zeal for cooking would disappear if it was a job.
Photographing and posting about what I am cooking is the only way I can share food with my twitter friends. If I could, I would have all of them over and feed them on a regular basis.
Normally I would ask what part of the world you are from but from the Disnyland pics and comments, I am going to go with CA. What is it about Disney that you seem to be there a lot!
You guessed right - I live in Southern California. I'm close enough to Disneyland that I go with Darcy a lot. Two years ago the hubs and I bought each other annual passes for Christmas and have loved having the freedom to visit as often as we want.
Disneyland is a really great thing for us to do with Darcy. She can be outside, running around, having fun, and we can enjoy ourselves too.
Disneyland is also a convenient place for Darcy and I to meet @kare831 and her daughter. It is awesome to watch the girls have fun together and @kare831 and I get to catch up with each other.
We know you're a teacher, a very noble profession. How long have you been teaching? Have you always wanted to be a teacher?
I have been teaching for close to seven years. I am lucky to have found a job that I love. It took me a long time to figure out that teaching would be a good fit for me.
In Kindergarten when the teacher asked the class what we wanted to be when we grew up, my answer was an agent for the CIA. Then I wanted to be in the FBI, and for a long time I wanted to be a princess.
When I realized that I couldn't snap my fingers and become a princess, I did look seriously at federal law enforcement. Ultimately, I decided it wasn't for me.
I had a series of dead end jobs for several years after earning my bachelor's degree. When I finally got sick of jumping from one soul-sucking job to another, I went back to school and got my master's in history. Which led to me finding my niche teaching adults.
I still hold out hope for the princess gig, so if you happen to hear about any openings - I have my tiara polished and ready to go!
What do you do to relax?
I know it will surprise you to hear that cooking is one of my favorite ways to relax! If I am feeling really stressed out, I love to bake bread - there is nothing like kneading dough to work out negative emotions.
I play with Darcy. Her belly laughs are one of my favorite things and the more I can get her to laugh, the happier I am.
I spend time with my husband. He is everything that is good in my world.
I read. I read. Then I read some more. I love being transported to another world. Stories (books or fic) are my favorite form of escapism.
Now for a little randomness - What are you currently reading? Favorite book? Favorite movie? Favorite place in the whole world?
I am reading a ton of fic right now. I also have several novels going. I am reading Koicto by Amy Jarecki, Bel Ami by Guy de Maupassant, The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, and Bloodfever by Karen Marie Moning.
I can't possibly name a favorite book. I have too many that I love. Some of my favorites are The Chronicles of Narnia, the Little House Books, the Anne of Green Gables books, the Harry Potter series, and anything by Sharon Kay Penman.
Hands down, my favorite movie is Casablanca. A few weeks ago my husband took me to see it on the big screen for the 70th anniversary! It was phenomenal.
My favorite place is Ireland, specifically, Dingle. We dream of retiring there.
What brought you to the fandom?
Like most people, it was a desire for more. I wanted more story, more character development, more romance, more adventure, and of course I wanted more than a fade-to-black for sexy scenes. I knew that fan fiction existed - I had even read quite a bit of Harry Potter fic. I never imagined that I would be anything more than a quietly lurking reader when I started reading Twi Fic.
Edward or Jacob?
Definitely Edward. What can I say? My favorite color has always been glitter.
How did you come to be a Twi-Girl?
The Twi-Girls Next Door had an event where they invited readers to recommend a fic they really liked and in a moment of bravery I decided to submit a rec. When I realized that my world did not come crashing down, that I wasn't outed to everyone I knew, and that particpating was actually a lot of fun, I decided to apply when positions became open. Being a Twi-Girl was what I would consider my real introduction to the fandom. The Twi-Girls Next Door allowed me to contribute on a small level by recommending stories and leading read alongs. From there it became easier to imagine taking on more while retaining my anonymity (I really like my closet - it is dark and comfortable).
With the busy life you lead, being a beta has to be time consuming. What brought you to Project Team Beta and how much beta'ing do you do for them?
I was looking to challenge myself and thought it would be fun to take PTB's beta test and see what happened. I was really happy that I passed muster! It does take pretty decent time management for me to get my chapter's back to them on time, but I need the accountability that a hard deadline gives me. I think I receive an average of one chapter a week from the PTB moderators, so it is a very manageable work load. If my job or outside life gets too crazy, PTB is awesome about working with me. I am grateful for the wide variety of beta work I get to experience with PTB. I believe with all my heart that the writing I have been exposed to through PTB has helped me become a better and more compassionate teacher.
Most fun about being a beta?
The friendships that have started with my sparkly red pen! I never, ever dreamed that I would make real life friends in the fandom. I treasure them so very much.
It is really gratifying to watch an author become more confident, take bigger chances, and develop into a better writer with each subsequent chapter.
And, of course, it is so awesome to be one of the first people to see what happens next!
Most difficult thing about being a beta?
Giving constructive criticism can be really difficult. I find it especially challenging because I want to shake my pom-poms and cheer my writers on. But, sometimes a writer needs honesty more than praise. I am constantly working on finding the balance between cheerleader and critic.
As a beta, when you encounter a story where the author is just going for to much over the top angst, drama, or smut. Essentially ruining their own story. What as a beta do you do?
So far I have been really lucky - I haven't run into that situation. I am sure at some point it will happen. Hopefully, I would be in the position of already having a good relationship with the writer, one where honesty would be appreciated and seen as being in service to the story. If not, I would be honest and tell the writer which sections weren't working for me and why. This is the sort of situation where having a team of betas and prereaders can be very helpful. One person thinking something doesn't work can be discounted, but if the whole team comments on a section it sends a strong message to re-work the story.
It has always drove me buggy authors who take months to update or disappear for a year or two, come back and then finish the story with maybe a chapter or two left - any thoughts on that?
For a long time I only read completed stories. In part, because I love instant gratification, but also because I didn't know how to find WIPs I would be interested in. That all changed when I started tweeting. A wonderful world of WIPs and completed stories opened up for me.
It makes the selfish child in me stomp her feet when stories go on hiatus (official or not), but I appreciate that the stories I read come from the minds of people who have lives outside of fan fiction, and that they share their stories for FREE. These stories are a gift. It is really impolite to denigrate someone's gift. It doesn't mean that I won't be tempted to flounce the writer in the future though.
The bandwagon effect. Basically a writer will write the same story over and over, just changing the settings, and still receive 1000's of reviews while really good stories struggle to even get noticed - thoughts?
What is popular and what is good are often different things. I look for stories that appeal to me - I don't take the number of reviews into consideration at all. I am much more likely to read something based on a twitter recommendation than anything else. When I find a story that I love, I do my best to pimp it out to my followers. I wish that every good story got tons of attention, but we both know that doesn't happen. I think that it takes more than publishing a story to get readers - it seems that writers that are active on twitter and facebook are able to publicize their stories more effectively than those that aren't. Of course... all of these thoughts come from someone who hasn't written a single story. If I ever do, we'll see if I get any readers. ;)

Favorite thing about the fandom?
The people! I have been awed by the kindness and support that I have received from the people I have met and the friends I have made. I love how much blood, sweat, tears, and heart people put into their stories and art. It thrills me that I get to be a small part of the creative process when a writer allows me to beta a chapter or a story. There are moments where we feel like a community and that is an awesome thing.
Least favorite thing about the fandom?
Plagiarism and negativity. There is no reason to steal someone elses story, EVER. If you don't like a story, don't read it. If you don't like someone, don't follow them. I think sometimes we all forget that we got into this fandom because we wanted to have fun, and get sucked into all kinds of unnecessary drama.

When Karen (@kare831) and I wanted to continue our one-shot What Fills The Eye Fills the Heart we put the feelers out there looking for a beta. She volunteered and it was the best day. Her enthusiasm about are writing gives us the encouragement we need to write the next chapter or story.

I'm lucky to live close enough to her that we can meet up at Disneyland with our girls and spend the afternoon together - usually once a month or so. We talk shop about Irishward and usually talk about whatever we're reading at the moment. It's fun! =) She's a good sport that's for sure - she took on Irishward without really having read the original one shot and he sure wouldn't be where he is today without her. =)
I think it's awesome you wanted to do a profile on her - beta's don't receive nearly enough thanks for everything they do. It's not an easy job that's for sure .

When I originally saw this interview I was so excited because I know light4dawn and she's my wolf girl! Let me explain, back in February I had just started to set up to incorporate some wolf recs to expand the blog. At the same time, light4dawn sent in a wolf rec. An amazing stroke of luck. It was so perfectly formatted and written that I posted it as is. We started chatting and soon after I offered her space to do recs. And soon after that, she started doing recs and interviewing the most elusive "wolf stars". Most notably AudreyII_fic and the adm's of Jacob Black N Pack.
For those who don't know, light4dawn is quite the accomplished writer with many a win and nom under her belt. She also dabbles in banner making which I love and even maniped my own banners for her features, you know how much I love that!

Q.) Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m a middle aged, married, stay at home mom of two girls who are in school full days. Yes, I’ve got spare time, thus the large volume of stories I’ve churned out over the past nine months. I’m opinionated, I don’t just “drop” things, I persist on beating a dead horse, and I often put my foot in my mouth.
Q.) Outside of Twilight and HP what are some of your favorite books/movies? Why?
My favorite books outside the fandom are not YA. I love a lot of Canadian authors—many of whom are critically acclaimed and should be read by everyone, not just those in Canada! My favorites from the past few years are:
The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood
A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry
Room by Emma Donoghue
They’ve all got their fair share of darkness, sadness, and angst. I like books that dig deep into society’s ethics and weaknesses, shining a glaring light our flaws, so we are reminded of our failings. This, I feel is a very necessary—to remind those of us in first world countries that we are not the be all and end all. No situation can improve unless the problem is recognized.
Q.) What made you get into fanfiction?
I wonder myself. Honestly? I am such a closet fan. Only my husband knows in RL that I’m this crazy. It all started the summer of 2010 when a friend of mine told me to watch Twilight. It happened to be on the movie network on TV so I watched it, really liked it, and then watched NM and Eclipse when they became available on TV (still wasn't willing to pay for it).
I enjoyed the movies mostly for the storyline and the supernatural mythology. I still didn’t know how the series ended (yes, I do live under a rock). That’s when I happened upon the books on sale at Wal-Mart, so I bought them, and read them. It wasn’t until I read New Moon that I fell in love with Jacob’s character. He was very real, not removed and unreachable like the Cullens. That was when the series went from a fantasy story to a desire to get to know a character. Of course, I eventually got to BD and became royally irked at how it ended.
But it wasn't enough to deter me. I can’t tell you why, because I feel the books were poorly written from both a technical and stylistic point of view, in addition to sending out terrible messages to young girls. They were so bad that strong messages like romanticizing suicide and deeming the ordinary as a flaw that needs to be excised were unintentional themes! Anyhow, I have to give Stephenie Meyer credit for creating characters so intriguing that despite all these flaws, I couldn’t let go of her series.
I was on her website devouring everything, including all the out takes she has posted there. Then I went to the Twilight Lexicon and YouTube watching interviews with the actors. Why I didn’t find fanfiction earlier is beyond me. By May 2011 I accidentally happened upon a story with the characters from the books but with a different ending. That was my first exposure to fanfiction. I hadn’t even known such a thing had existed until then.
Q.) Do you remember the first fiction you read?
No. All I remember was that it was a J/B fic on a website of its own that the author created and I found it accidentally while surfing for more Twilight/Jacob Black related articles.
Q.) How long did you read fiction before you said to yourself “This is something I want to do”?
Three months. Like many of us, I went on a reading marathon when I discovered fanfic in May 2011, and by the time August rolled around I decided I’d like to try writing a story. I had never written creatively before, outside elementary school, but the anonymity that the Internet provided gave me a security blanket.
Q.) What was your very first fic? What inspired you to write it?
My first was Journey to a New Day. I was inspired by all the other J/B stories out there where Jacob got the girl in the end. I wanted to do it too, and use the story to point out all the reasons why Jacob should have gotten the girl in the first place! For this reason, I only altered events that would have reasonably been altered because of the one event I changed in the start of my fic and kept everything else from canon intact. I did the best I could to stay in character and used many opportunities to voice my opinion on details ignored by the source material.
Q.) How did you get past any nerves to be able to post it?
I actually didn't have too many “nerves” until after I tried to post it. At the time, the only large website for FF I knew of was twilighted. Having never written fiction before, I was completely unfamiliar with proper punctuation for dialogue. My first submission got rejected for punctuation, and I felt like an imbecile. I went on a hunt for any article or forum I could find to learn about proper punctuation. I found Project Team Beta and ran my chapters through them. During this time, (because there is quite a bit of a wait to get chapters beta’ed and then have your submission validated for the first time at twilighted) I found FFnet. After my story got validated I was good as gold. And Project Team Beta was fantastic. I learned a lot from them.
Q.) What do you do when you have writer's block?
Force myself to write. I know many writers say this is bad, but it’s what works for me. If I drop everything and wait for the “right” moment, it will never come. Inertia sets in and it becomes a self-defeating exercise trying to find inspiration. I find if I force myself to write, I do end up with something. It may not be good, but it’s something. When I have something, I sleep on it, then go back, read and edit. Sometimes I’ll start editing a sentence and end up changing the whole chapter, but that’s good, because it gave me a starting point to get to what I needed in the first place.
Q.) How do you deal with bad reviews?
In the beginning it almost brought me to tears, but now I shrug and depending on the nature of the review I’ll either reply back (I always reply back) with an explanation for my decisions or a request that they not read my stories if they don’t like Jacob. It amazes me the people who come to read J/B fics when it’s clear they are fanatical vampire fans. On almost all my fics, I only list Bella and Jacob as characters. How much more obvious could I get? If nothing else, do they not value their time?
Q.) Who are some authors that you look up to? Why?
I love all of audreyii-fic’s stories in the twilight fandom (that I’ve read, which is almost all of them). She’s great technically, but also entertains. Her stories have depth and she keeps to canon as much as possible, which is what I like to read as far as fanfiction is concerned.
There are many one shots by a few authors who aren’t writing anymore that I loved. Unfortunately, I don’t remember specifically which ones were my favorites, but all of their Twilight stories were good. They are blueandblack , walkingaftermidnight , and Stretch.
One of my favorite one shots is by an author who still writes and that is called: Do You Remember? by LJ Summers. It would appear she’s only a pinch-hitter for Team Jacob, though.
Q.) Is there anything you would like to say to your readers?
Sure, leave reviews! Seriously. And if you like my stories, tell your friends. I keep hearing about all these people who get billions of hits and readers and it deflates me. Those stats and reviews is all writers of fanfic get as ‘payment’ and without it there would be little reason to post, and even less reason to write, especially for someone like me who does this solely as a hobby.
