Renaissance Romance Publishing

In late 2011, Lisa opened Renaissance Romance Publishing with Michele Richard and Laura Braley, and in her guest post, Lisa tells us what it was like to take on the adventure...

Starting Renaissance Romance Publishing

Starting any new adventure is both scary and exciting, and this was no different. Michele Richard, Laura Braley, and I had talked about starting our publishing house for a while before we actually made the decision to do so. I’ll be the first to admit that I was terrified to take that step, putting myself and my best friends at risk, but it was worth it. We got the basics settled, such as names, logos, started our website, and got emails set up. At first, we wanted to be careful, to make sure that we were confident in our own work before we made the decision take on other authors. Asking them to trust us before we’d worked out most of the kinks was too much and we refused to take that chance. When we were ready, we opened the doors, so to speak, and reached out to our first potential author.

Some might ask with the influx of self-published authors out there, why we just didn't make the decision to self-publish, why decide to start a publishing house when we have to compete with hundreds of other houses? There isn't really a clear reason behind that. We knew that we’d have to fight to get our names out there, fight to convince people to take a chance on our books, and our authors, but we've done so because we believe that every author who wants to be published should have the chance. Sometimes, authors rush the process and they release their books before they’re ready. We strive not to make those mistakes.

The world of publishing is changing and we must evolve the way we think. We can take control of our destiny and allow our passions to shine.
